WHO IS SUKUMA TWENDE

The story of Sukuma Twende Trust started in 2000 with a small group of cyclists taking part in a charity event at Oshwal Centre held to raise funds to fence endangered Aberdare forest in Kenya.

Why the name? "Sukuma Twende." In Kiswahili, "sukuma" means to "push" and "twende" means to "go." This was the exact motivation the cyclists needed to walk away winners at the charity event thus solidifying the group with common goals & interests. It grew from strength to strength towards helping the less fortunate members of our society.

WHAT WE DO

Fast forward to 2013, and the Westgate tragedy, where we lost one of our founding members, Mitul Shah.  His determination and bravery inspired us to organize a fundraiser for Amani Gardens at the Karura Forest. Amani Gardens is the only picnic site that is accessible to wheelchairs.

In 2015, we formalised the Trust, which now focuses its work on core areas under our four pillars: Environment, Sports, Education, and Welfare. Their 80-strong membership currently includes spouses and children of founder members.
