The Full Story

The story of Sukuma Twende began in 2000 when a small group of cyclists took part in a charity event at the Oshwal Centre to raise funds to fence the endangered Aberdare Forest in Kenya.

The name "Sukuma Twende" comes from two Swahili words, "Sukuma" means to ‘push’ and "Twende" means to ‘go’." This was the exact motivation the cyclists needed, and they walked away as Winners. This solidified the group, bringing them together with common goals & interests and growing from strength to strength while helping the less fortunate members of our society.

Fast forward to 2013, we lost on of our founding members, Mitul Shah, during the Westgate tragedy.  His determination and bravery inspired us to organize a fundraiser for Amani Gardens at the Karura Forest.

We formalised the Sukuma Twende Trust in 2017, and now focus on four core areas. Also known as our ‘four pillars’: ENVIRONMENT, SPORTS, EDUCATION and WELFARE.  Our 80-strong membership currently includes spouses and children of founder members and is 100% volunteer-run.

Our FOUR PILLARS operate in conjunction and complement each other. The separation is purely to ensure that we can give our best to those in need.

SPORTS

We all know that participation in sporting activities of all kinds encourage teamwork, the setting of realistic goals, strategizing, and effective problem- solving skills to participate proactively and competitively. Sports create influential leaders who positively inspire their community and the youth.

Sukuma Twende Trust has been forefront in providing sporting equipment and skills to our youth, while providing opportunities for the youth to succeed in a professional capacity.

EDUCATION

Education is the key to a successful nation. To enhance and meet the needs of education in Kenya, we have been instrumental in supporting learning institutions with the necessary equipment, infrastructure, and learning materials to improve the overall learning experience.

WELFARE

The welfare of our fellow Kenyans is at the heart of all our pillars and this pillar brings it all together by helping to improve the livelihood of the less fortunate members of our society by empowering them with the necessary tools, skills, and infrastructure.

ENVIRONMENT

Environmental sustainability is a non-negotiable in this world. There is no better time to begin working harder towards sustainability and planet health. We would be nowhere without nature.

We aim to conserve our water towers and reduce our carbon footprints by increasing forest cover through tree planting initiatives, construction of sand dams and clean up drives.
